Alexandria

I'm very happy to have Alexandria on board as the school's first teacher and my colleague in establishing The Bryant Park Pre-School. She just has the best temperament -- always calm, always logical, kind and dependable.

And I am delighted that she is coming with me next Wednesday to the first meeting with the Palm Beach County Health Department to look at the blueprints of the building...particularly since she knows how to read a site plan. What luck!

She doesn't like having her picture taken, but I wanted to put her picture up here, as she will play a big part in everything that happens over the coming months.

She's not only caring for my child during the day, working with him on letters and numbers and taking him to the library and around town, but she's imagining the school along with me, thinking how everything should be, AND is going to be taking classes at Palm Beach State College in the evenings and on Saturdays to get her childcare certification.

My name is Margaret Menge. I'm a journalist and the mother of a 3-year-old boy. Over the last three years, I've rethought a lot of things I always thought I knew about how best to have and bring up children. Part of that thinking has brought me to the realization that I can't just leave my child at any old day care or pre-school. It has to be someplace special.

So in 2012, I started work researching how to start a small, neighborhood pre-school here in Lake Worth to give my son and other small children in the community the opportunity for early learning in a really stimulating and nurturing environment, one that allows the child to follow his or her own drive to explore in nature. This means letting the child pick up sticks, dig fingers in dirt and sand, and build things with leaves.

I also want to have, as a teacher, someone who recognizes, as Maria Montessori did, that the infant and the child is a unique mental being, naturally driven to learn.

The school, inside and out, will more closely resemble a Waldorf school, however, with calming, pastel colors, and natural wood toys. As they do in most Waldorf schools, pre-schoolers will help knead dough every day that is baked into bread for their own snack.

The goal is to open the pre-school by the fall of 2014, though we may be able to start meeting in the spring or summer if I can acquire a property soon.

I would like to limit the size to 12 children ages 3-4.
