Our Space

I haven't gotten to spend much time in the space we've rented, so am glad I took a couple of pictures when I was there last week. I love to look at these and imagine what this room could be, and what it will be. I see pastel walls and sheer curtains and wooden toys... It's going to be beautiful.

About me

My name is Margaret Menge. I'm a journalist and the mother of a 3-year-old boy. Over the last three years, I've rethought a lot of things I always thought I knew about how best to have and bring up children. Part of that thinking has brought me to the realization that I can't just leave my child at any old day care or pre-school. It has to be someplace special.

So in 2012, I started work researching how to start a small, neighborhood pre-school here in Lake Worth to give my son and other small children in the community the opportunity for early learning in a really stimulating and nurturing environment, one that allows the child to follow his or her own drive to explore in nature. This means letting the child pick up sticks, dig fingers in dirt and sand, and build things with leaves.

I also want to have, as a teacher, someone who recognizes, as Maria Montessori did, that the infant and the child is a unique mental being, naturally driven to learn.

The school, inside and out, will more closely resemble a Waldorf school, however, with calming, pastel colors, and natural wood toys. As they do in most Waldorf schools, pre-schoolers will help knead dough every day that is baked into bread for their own snack.

The goal is to open the pre-school by the fall of 2014, though we may be able to start meeting in the spring or summer if I can acquire a property soon.

I would like to limit the size to 12 children ages 3-4.
